Why the name Filter? The band has said to some that they chose the name because it sounded cool, but Richard Patrick and Brian Liesegang had a more meaningful reasoning behind the choosing of the name Filter. The name of the band came from the German metaphysician Immanuel Kant's theorem on subjective reality ("In between the material world and consciousness is Filter. And reality is in the consciousness, not out there. Perception is what determines your reality."). Patrick feels that everyone's mind is a filter. "There's reality, and there's your conscious perception of it, " he says. What is Filter? "We don't want to be branded as industrial", says Brian. Some have suggested "hypno-rock", "techno-thrash", and even "unadulterated alt-rock". Why not Industrial? "It's a genre", "it's a limited genre...", "there's been nothing interesting in industrial music since 1988, when Al Jourgensen of Ministry and Skinny Puppy did their best work", says Brian.
