From Tune Ups section of Guitar World September 1995 BIG MAC ATTACK Within weeks of it's release, Filter's dark 'n' catchy "Hey Man Nice Shot" had radio station request lines flooded and the internet's music pundits debating the song's possible connection to Kurt Cobain's self inflicted shot heard 'round the world. Filter's Richard Patrick and Brian Liesgang insist the song was written pre-Cobain, adding that the computer assisted debate over the single's lyrics ironically detracts from what they thought would be the real intrigue factor surrounding their debut, Short Bus (Reprise)-that it was composed almost entirely on a Macintosh computer. "The Mac gives us a whole new palette and way of manipulating sound which you can't get in real time," Liesegang says. "If we stumble across something, like a happy accident, we can focus on it, and just repeat it a couple of times rather than try to recreate it with multiple takes." All those Mac-manipulated first-takes help make Short Bus a surprisingly loose collection of sloppy, semi-industrial noise with the type of carefully arranged bells and whistles mix that you might expect from a pair of Nine Inch Nails refugees (Patrick played guitar, Leisegang did tour programming on NIN's last campaign). Patrick credits his own penchant for loud Marshalls, Leisegang's ability to sample, reverse and transpose feedback, and a few words of Trent Reznor wisdom for a collective guitar sound that never succumbs to the murky synthesized rhythm. "Trent taught me that two little notes like B and C# can be approached as "Fuck you, Fuck you," says Patrick, "and that any guitar part, no matter, how small, can convey attitude. As long as you're playing with conviction, it's legitimate." -ANDY LANGER
