Article from January 99 issue of Alternative Press THE 25 MOST ANTICIPATED ALBUMS OF 1999 FILTER WORKING ALBUM TITLE: TBA PROJECTED RELEASE DATE: April 1999, on Reprise WHAT'S TAKING SO LONG? Filter mainman Rich Patrick spent most of last year in Chicago building his own studio and assembling a band. "I wasn't sure who was going to be in the band," says Patrick, who will travel to Los Angeles in January to mix the new album with Short Bus mixer Ben Grosse. Assisting Patrick on the album are longtime Filter members Geno Lenardo (guitar), Frank Cavanaugh (bass), and new drummer Steve Gillis, of whom Patrick says, "He's been in thousands of bands in Chicago, but has always preferred to keep a grassroots interest in music. The reason he liked us was that we were a drum-machine band and he could put his personality all over the playing." WHAT'S IT SOUNDS LIKE NOW? "This record is all about dynamics," says Patrick. "Every song is night-and-day different from the others. Conceptually it's the same kind of music [as 1995's Short Bus], but it's so much more sick and there's so much more attitude in every direction. One minute we have a symphony, and the next, it's the hardest punk-rock song you'll ever hear. My favorite song on the record is 'Welcome To The Fold' -it's a 10-minute song with three songs in it." Patrick says he isn't worried about rescaling the platinum-selling heights of Short Bus. "When I was a kid, all my favorite bands reached into my heart and touched me," he says. "It's all about that one kid in Idaho who's listening to me on his Walkman and whether I've affected him to go and do something great." -Jason Pettigrew
