Addicted To Noise staff writer Gil Kaufman reports: Filter co-founder Brian Liesegang says the working title of the next Filter album, which he's sure will change, is "Longbutter." He says the album "won't come out in next two weeks, but definitely in the next millennium." Getting serious, he says that the band is shooting for a September '97 release. Given their tour experience and growth as both individuals and musicians, Liesegang speculates this sophomore outing will be quite different from Filter's debut, Short Bus . "I think the first record was a very stark, simple thing and we did that on purpose to try and avoid the NIN comparisons," Liesegang says. "We couldn't go in there with a bunch of synthesizers and go at it because we were afraid of the Nails comparisons, but now, I think we've embraced the fact that, fuck it, we are a computer band. But we're not as mad [as Trent Reznor] and I don't think we're gonna write a record that says 'We hate ourselves and want to die.' " Liesegang and partner Richard Patrick are working on finding a way to express aggression "without the necessary self-loathing." Why the high road? "It just gets so silly when you hear these guys on their fourth record, saying 'Oh, life sucks.' Well, then pull the trigger." Once the band overcame the fear inherent in starting a new, unexpected venture, he says they gained a new confidence and realized a number of things about themselves, not the least of which was that they happen to like loud, expansive, aggressive and epic music. "We're not turning into hippies." What a relief.
